Upon meeting a man for the first time, I can usually tell whether he is someone I want to see again or not. The way we act and speak gives off volumes of information. Someplace public like a coffee house or cafe is a good first date. That way we don't feel awkward for too long if there isn't chemistry. I prefer to pay for myself the first time.
