I was the first in my family to attend college because after a series of physically demanding jobs I decided my career trajectory ended in an environmentally controlled space in which I used my brain and not my muscles. I do, however, still enjoy mowing my own yard (all one acre of it), gardening, and splitting my own firewood. I think the outdoors is something to stop, enjoy, and experience close up and isn’t a location to just run through on the way to somewhere else. I do enjoy outdoor activities including fishing, lazy hiking, and nature photography. I don’t mind getting my hands dirty.Ever interested in the natural world and how it works, I got my PhD and spent a considerable amount of my career tromping around foreign lands helping to establish infectious disease surveillance systems. I was one of those folks looking for the next emerging virus. While in graduate school I helped found a medical school in Nepal and spent a few months there teaching. I have seen many parts of the world but few would consider the locations traditional vacation destinations.As an introvert, I prefer deep conversations on a one on one basis, but I can hold my own at parties and larger social gatherings. Some even find my humorous and quite silly at times. I am fiercely loyal. I still say “pop” *** “soda.” I prefer to drive over flying if possible as I enjoy road trips.I enjoy reading, cooking, and taking care of my ***year old farmhouse. I love reading about history and recently did a tour of the major Civil War battlefields in the DC area.
