If there has been quite a bit of communication prior to the 1st date, dinner would work. Movies, plays, sport games, etc.. should be reserved for the 3rd+ date. It takes time to get to know someone, why insert an activity which communication isn't necessary?

A nice dinner or maybe just coffee and a walk in the park. It wouldn't neccessarily have to be dressy. Casual is good also.
