A first date, for me should be one with an opportunity to talk and get to know each other. It can take place just about anywhere. Dinner is nice. Lunch or coffee is okay. I prefer a glass of wine or a beer to be honest. It makes the situation a little more comfortable. Although, too much drinking is probably not a good idea on a first date either.
